Flying & Gliding

Joining the Air Cadets opens up lots of opportunities, including the chance to fly! It’s our aim to get you airborne as often as possible, as a passenger in a light aircraft, a glider or even on-board RAF aircraft such as our Typhoon fast-jet or a Chinook helicopter.

There are plenty of opportunities for cadets to get in the air. Air Experience Flights could even see you take to the skies in a Grob Tutor light aircraft. Stand out from the crowd and you could be put forward for an overseas flight on a Hercules, VC10 or Tri-star. If you’re really lucky you could even join a pilot in one of our fast-jet aircraft or experience the unbeatable exhilaration of a

Red Arrows flight!

Aviation Training Package

Blue ATP

Aviation Training packages provide cadets with an introduction to aeronautical topics, such as the primary effects of controls, lift and airfield procedures. There are 4 elements to the blue ATP:

  • Aviation familiarisation course - to give an insight into the world of aviation
  • Ground school - providing all the theoretical knowledge on aviation, flying and gliding, and airfields
  • Part task trainer - simulator flights to put into practice the ground schooling
  • Airborne sortie(s) at an Air Experience Flight for 'A' wings or at a Volunteer Gliding School for 'G' wings

Bronze ATP

There are three elements to the Bronze course that further develop the cadets aviation knowledge:

  • Ground school to revise what they have learnt from the Blue course as well as introduce cockpit drills, attitude management and selection.
  • PTT training will focus on aircraft trimming, circuits and undershooting or overshooting approaches
  • Airborne sorties at either an AEF or VGS will demonstrate datum attitude and stability, medium turns and approach and landing and will result in the A wings or G wings respectively.
